The Health Innovation Hub supports the development of a national vision for the life sciences sector in Romania and a roadmap that leverages the European strategy in this field. The event “Promoting Innovation in Health and Partnerships for Life Sciences in Romania,” held on October 2, was initiated by the founding members of the Hub — the Ministry of Health, the G6-UMF University Alliance, and the Local American Working Group Association (LAWG). The event highlighted major opportunities for Romania to attract funding and strengthen its life sciences sector, generating benefits for patients, academia, the healthcare system, the labor market, and the broader economy.
The European Commission recently launched the new European Strategy “Choose Europe for Life Sciences” (2025–2030), which includes measures across the entire life sciences value chain to accelerate innovation, facilitate market access, and strengthen the competitiveness of the European pharmaceutical sector. Over €10 billion per year from EU funding programs (Horizon Europe, EU4Health, Digital Europe, LIFE, Innovation Fund, Erasmus+) support actions for implementing this strategy in the member states.
The meeting in Bucharest brought together representatives of the Health Committees of the Romanian Parliament, the National Agency for Medicines, the National Health Insurance House, academia, the innovative pharmaceutical industry, medical societies, patient associations, the diplomatic community, and numerous stakeholders from the life sciences sector.
During the meeting, a Memorandum of Collaboration was signed to develop Romania’s vision for the life sciences sector, reflecting the country’s strategic commitment to promoting a predictable, sustainable, and competitive life sciences industry as a central pillar for economic development and public health.
An essential element in aligning with the European Strategy is national preparedness, through the establishment of coordination mechanisms to monitor funding calls, the development of dedicated administrative units for attracting and managing European funds in this field, and Romania’s integration into European coordination groups.
The Health Innovation Hub supports an active role for Romania in implementing the European Strategy “Choose Europe for Life Sciences”, by integrating its objectives and initiatives into national policies and programs. Through this alignment, Romania can accelerate the modernization of its healthcare and research ecosystem while strengthening its position within the European Union.
